No more paying $50-$100 an hour again! If you are a recording artists, a home studio is the best investment you can make. If you’re on a limited budget and you have a reasonably quiet room in your house or apartment, I recommend the setup I first used.
My first setup was comprised of a Mbox, Rode NT-1A microphone, Fostex monitors, Steinberg’s Nuendo (vocals) and WaveLab (mastering, editing, sampling), Propellerhead’s Reason, and computer I built myself consisting of a Pentium IV 2.8 Ghz processor with 1GB or RAM and a SATA hard drive (this was in 2004).
Imagine what kind of computer you can build now. If you’ve got the money go Mac, but if not build your PC yourself. That is one of the first things they teach audio recording students at Full Sail, how to build a computer.
When I first built my home studio I used to bring my music into Dexter Redding’s (Otis Redding’s son) studio for feedback and critiques. He’d tell me “you’re getting the same quality sound I’m getting that’s crazy”. Once we both worked with a girl group and my vocals came out so well Dexter said “you finish recording them and we’ll just add a few touches in my the studio.”
Invest in your own studio, don’t waste money paying somebody else. I’d love to take your money, but I have to tell you the truth.
