Who’s Your Audience?

AudienceWere you born in 1980? Did you listen to music now and think it is completely void of talent and substance? You probably do. This is because you are no longer a part of the age group Record labels market to.

Record labels and many other companies market to teenagers because they spend money. Most teenagers (not all) are so absorbed in their everyday lives, they do not think about budgeting. If their friends go out and by Air Jordans, they buy Air Jordans. If their cousin has Chris Brown as their cell phone ring tone, they want Chris Brown as their ring tone. Most emotionally developed adults do not do this. However, there are exceptions to every rule.

Teen audiences are a lot easier to influence. Chances are if MTV says it’s hot, they will believe it’s hot. The other day I caught a glimpse of the Real World. I was addicted to it when I was in high school. However, as I watched it yesterday I said ‘how in the world did I ever enjoy this’. Then it hit me. I am a lot more emotionally mature, my interests have changed. Hence, I flipped the channel.

Think about who you’re making music for. If you’re a Neo Soul artist, chances are you’re looking at a young adult to senior citizen audience. If you’re a Dirty South artist, you’re attracting a lot of teenagers and some young adults. Knowing your audience helps you pick your logo, brand, marketing tactics, and performance locations. With some audiences performances are not even necessary, just a music video.

We’ll cover picking your performances later. Till next time,
