There are a lot of independent artists that have successfully sold music, but cannot figure out why they’re not getting calls from record labels. Nine times out of ten it’s because Nielsen SoundScan did not track their sales. In order for Nielsen SoundScan to track your music sales you must have a barcode and you have to register that barcode with Nielsen SoundScan. This applies to music sales online as well. Don’t just rely on SnoCap or MySpace, that’s a huge mistake. MySpace servers crash all the time. Don’t trust somebody else to report your numbers, they may not.
If you don’t have the money to obtain a UPC barcode and register with Nielsen I list an alternative method in the post below, Got Barcodes? Got Registered?. I also dispell the myth about barcodes only applying to albums and discluding single. That’s a lie people and shame on SnoCap (recently bought out by Imeem) for stating that in their FAQ’s. In the end the final decision is up to you, but I recommend you read and refer back to the the post Got Barcodes? Got Registered? and it’s links.
