I have preached countless times the importance of having your own web page (yourname.com). It is not enough to just have a MySpace and FaceBook page. Creating your own social network is another great way to promote. What? I’m not a genius like Tom I can’t code a whole social network, I can barely edit my MySpace page!! My response to you all is YES YOU CAN!!
Ning is a free site/service that allows you to set up your own social network. It’s easy to use and setup!! If you can setup a MySpace or FaceBook Page you can setup Ning. The only downside to Ning is that they need more design templates. However they continuously add more as they expand (just like WordPress).
Free vs. Fees
Ning is free, but if you want to add more features it does cost a small fee. For example, if you want your own URL domain name (i.e yoursocialnetwork.com) it costs $4.95 per month. Also free accounts are awarded 10GB of storage and 100GB of Bandwith (that equals approximately 5,000 photos or 500 videos). You can purchase more space (10GB of storage and 100GB of bandwidth) for $9.95 per month.
Bottom Line
This is a great way to promote your music and keep track of your fans online. It is highly interactive and if you forget to post one of your performances online, chances are one of your fans will do it for you. You can sell your music right there on the social network, making it a lot easier and more convenient for you and your fans.
Good Karma
Don’t forget about good Karma. If you see another fellow indie artist with a social network join theirs and invite them to join yours. It’s great promotion for all parties. Here’s an example HotIndieMusicWorld.com (a ning social network for Hot Indie Music). Take a look at what I’m talking about in action.
