Analog Vs Digital Recording Technology

Cell Phone is Becoming Prefferred Music Player

Cell Phone is Becoming Preferred Music Player

Months ago I wrote the post Best Financial Investment Is Home Recording Studio . For Indie artists artists and producers that has never been more true than now in this economy. I now want to discuss analog vs digital setups.

Music Formats of the Future
It has already been established that cell phones are the next wave of music players. With the release of the new touch screen cell phones such as Apple iPhone, LG Glimmer, Samsung Armani and a host of others cell phones are slowly but surely becoming first and points of contact for communications, news, email and music.
That being said, cell phones only have so much memory.

Cell Phones for Pleasure not For Data
The new wave of cell phones are designed for convenience, entertainment and high Internet connection speeds. They were not designed with the intention of carrying large files of data for an extensive period of time. This is why the mp3 file is the preferred format of cell phones. SMALL FILE SIZE. Indie artists and producers you must consider this when creating your studio. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again technology determined the music format.

Commercial Music Lovers Vs. Sound Music Lovers
There are Sound music lovers and Sound music experts. The experts want to hear a clear sound so they will visit eccentric record stores to find the older formats of their favorites songs. Why? They want to hear the sound in its most pure and virgin form Therefore they want to hear the full effects of analog recording and its warmth.

Commercial Music lovers comprise the majority of music buyers. Commercial Music lovers want their song of choice as quickly as possible. They really don’t care about the origin of the sound as long as they can hear it and it is not muffled. That being said commercial music lovers will pick up their phone, search the web (on their phone) for the mp3, download it and they are off to work or school.

Commercial Music Lovers = Majority of Buyers and They…..
DO NOT CARE ABOUT ANALOG SOUND!! Now as an indie artist or producer this does not give you the right to not care about analog sound. However, you must factor this in when designing or building your home studio. If you’re a rock band, you have to be somewhat concerned about analog sound. You’ll have to mic up the drums, figure out how you want to record the guitar and address other things of this nature. However, if you’re a hip hop artist you can go with or without it.

Just remember this:
Your song will be distributed digitally online and put into mp3 format. The sound is going to be compressed (crunched/reduced) to fit a 3-4 MB (Megabyte) file size. This means something is going to be lost!! No worries, nothing to the point that Commercial Music Lovers won’t buy it. However, don’t spend thousands of dollars on analog equipment if it is going to get lost in mp3 file conversion. Get my drift guys? Be smart, also for bands recording in expensive studios getting charged $100/hr you need to consider the above. If you can, get your own analog mix board and then run the board into your Mbox, Digi 003 rack or whatever sound card interface your using and record. Bottom line, watch your budget and plan for the future.

Future Music File Formats
To date mp3 reigns supreme. There are other file formats, for example I discussed FLAC earlier this year. However, cell phone companies have expressed little to no interest in incorporating other file types in their platforms. For now it is the mp3, tomorrow we’re not sure but we do know that it will be a digital file format. That being said digital technology (such as an Mbox or Digi 003 Rack) is a must in your home recording studio. Analog is nice, but not always necessary. Choose your analog technology wisely as most of its sound warmth will get lost in the digital conversion to mp3.
